Carefully remove any packaging from the flowers. Strip off all leaves that fall below the water line, as these will decompose and contaminate the water. Cut 2 - 3cm off all stems using a clean sharp knife or scissors. Cut at a sharp angle so the stem can absorb water more effectively and place immediately in water. Avoid cutting through nodes on the flower stems. Place your flowers in a clean vase and use fresh lukewarm water. Avoid metal containers as they neutralise the effects of flower food. Add all of the flower food provided.
If you have received a hand tied display in a bubble of water please follow the directions above after a couple of days to help prolong the life of the flowers.
Display the flowers in a cool, light location away from draughts, direct sunlight, radiators and fresh fruit, vegetables, cigarette smoke. Remember to top up the vase water daily and remove faded flowers as they occur. To refresh your flowers re-cut the stems every 2 – 3 days, and replace in fresh lukewarm water.
Note: Bouquet contents may be a skin irritant and harmful if eaten. Your bouquet/plant should not be placed directly on to furniture or polished surfaces as scratching or staining may occur, we advise you use a protective mat.
Lilies - Keep cool at all times. Replace their water everyday. Once the buds have opened pull out the pollen stamens, this prolongs the life of the flower by tricking it into staying in bloom in the hope of getting fertilized. If lilies stain use sellotape to remove the stain. Do not use water as this will only fix the stain and make it nearly impossible to remove. Beware that lilies can be highly poisonous to cats, therefore owners should keep their pets away from them.
Roses - Place roses in a vase of cold, clean water with preservative and replace the water every 2 days – don’t just top it up, replace it completely. To nourish flowers after the preservative is used up, refill your vase every day with a solution of one teaspoon of sugar and two drops of liquid bleach per gallon of fresh, cold water. Limp roses can be revived by standing up to their necks in lukewarm water in a cool room.
Flowers can look great in alsorts of containers, jam jars with a ribbon round, large storage tins, not just big fancy vases. Get creative and divide up your bouquet and have a play with different styles, containers, heights etc. You’ll see how much fun we get to have every day!
Having just one type of flower in a vase is very trendy, it works brilliantly with daffs, tulips and roses.
